Brief History of the College

This institution is situated in an economically and educationally backward area in the central part of Odisha. Located on the National Highway No. 149, it is well connected to a number of important places of the State. Though it is adjacent to the two most important power projects of Odisha, namely, Rengali hydro-electricity project and the Super Thermal Power Project at Kaniha, it is least benefitted from them as it rests in the penumbra region of these power-boosters. Hence the sparsely populated villages of this area suffer eternally from chill penury and administrative aloofness.

Due to some unimaginable instinct to educate the youth populace of the area, some of the local enthusiasts took a firm decision to establish an institution to help the poor fathers solidify their fugitive dreams. In 1979, a meeting was convened to test the mind of the so-called dignitaries of the area including Late Dharanidhar Pradhan, Ex-MLA, Pallahara, Late  Hari Prasad Pradhan, Sri Sadasiva Pradhan, Sri Ganeswar Sahoo, Late Gobardhan Pradhan, Sri Dileswar Pradhan, Late Kolha Charan Sahoo, Late Nabaghana Pradhan and a noted educationist of this area, Late Brajabandhu Pradhan. All of them unanimously agreed to lay the foundation stone of this college by raising a fund from local charity.

Initially started as an intermediate Arts College in the auspices of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Uchha Vidyapeetha, the institution was soon shifted to its present location surrounded by sal and mahua trees giving an air of a gurukul ashram. The Degree classes were started in the year 1984 and the college got affiliated to the Utkal University. In the year 1994, the college got recognition by the UGC and became eligible to receive grants under sections 2f and 12b. The Intermediate Science classes also started in the same year.

Last year the college added English as an Honours subject along with History and Political Science, which are a bit older programmes. Recently, the college was allowed by the authorities to add up Degree Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany and Zoology as Honours subjects. The university has introduced Choice Based Credit System for the undergraduate courses. The government is also actively considering implementing its flagship project of separating the Higher Secondary classes from the Degree classes shortly.

The college has received seed money for running the existing Internal Quality Assessment Cell after it was assessed and accredited by NAAC in 2005 and graded C++. The college is going to be assessed for the second cycle of reaccreditation in the month of October, 2016. The college is now a growing institution having a women’s hostel and a well equipped library.
